Music video for Lens - The Way Up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6QzGfP4cHA
Born Michael Newton in 1986, Lens’ musical talents extend from writing and producing his songs to editing the videos. Most of his music is solo, although he is a member of KIG Family. Lens currently produces RNB, Hip Hop and Funky House, but ventures into other genres are inevitable.
Strongly influenced by Ryan Leslie and StarGate ( among others ), Lens’ productions usually include chordal patterns played on his own synthesized sounds. His songs are always subject based.
Lens’ passion for music began with mixing dancehall songs over the same riddim, followed by grime and garage. This led to him joining childhood friends KIG Family as a DJ, with whom he would go on to mix alongside on various radio shows and at youth clubs. He was forced to pick up the microphone for the first time, to respond to a diss track recorded by Hitty. Recording this track encouraged Lens to write and record songs, over the instrumentals from his CD collection, alongside childhood friend Kasino, which spanned over several mix CDs.
Unsatisfied with having to do cover songs, Lens began producing music. The passion for producing grew, and this became Lens’ main focus ( no pun intented ). His only verses at this point were on tracks he was featured on, ( notably KIG Family Shake Your Back Off, which they performed to win 3rd place at Battle of the Boroughs ).
His first music video, completed in August 2010, was entitled “We Don’t Have to End”, for a song based on true stories about past relationships, reflecting that they could have been repaired. He has recently followed it up in January 2011 with “Me at my Best”, a song about his aspirations as an artist and producer, which saw a huge improvement in his presence on camera, and live performance. His main focus is still producing, but when certain beats catch his ear in a way he thinks only he hears, he will write and record a song.
